How to add 2FA to Hotmail, Live & Outlook accounts
1. Access Security Settings:
-
Go to the Outlook.com website and sign in to your account.
-
Click on your profile icon (usually in the top right corner) and select "My Microsoft account".
-
Navigate to the "Security" tab in the left navigation pane.
-
You might be prompted to sign in again to verify your identity.
2. Add a Security Verification Method:
-
Under "Security & Privacy," find "More Security Settings".
-
Locate the "Two-step verification" section.
-
Choose to "Turn on" or "Turn off" two-step verification.
-
Follow the on-screen instructions to choose your preferred method (Microsoft Authenticator app, phone number for SMS codes, or another method).
-
If using the Authenticator app, you may need to download it and scan a QR code or enter a code provided by Microsoft to add your account.
-
If using SMS codes, you'll need to provide your phone number and verify it by entering the code sent to you.
3. Using 2FA:
-
When you sign in to your Hotmail account on a new device or browser, you'll be prompted to enter your password and then verify your identity using the method you selected.
-
If using the Authenticator app, you'll receive a notification on your phone and need to approve the sign-in attempt.
-
If using SMS codes, you'll receive a code via text message that you'll need to enter.
Important Notes:
-
Enabling 2FA adds a significant layer of security to your account, making it much harder for unauthorised users to access your emails.
-
If you lose access to your primary verification method, you can still recover your account using your backup verification methods (if you have set them up) or by contacting Microsoft support.
-
It's recommended to have at least two active verification methods to avoid being locked out of your account if one method becomes unavailable.
